This month’s newsletter is all about you! What YOU can do to improve your search engine rankings so you can really make the most of your website, after all, you’ve probably put a lot of time and effort into building your site, so now it’s time for your website to pay you back!

What Do Search Engines Look For?

Search engines all look for different factors and they place these factors in different orders of priority. Let’s look at Google as it holds 85% of the market share in Australia..... Google looks for over 300 different factors both on-page (all to do with your website) and off-page (all to do with things external to do with your website i.e. on the internet about your company). Google is constantly changing what it is looking for and has strict guidelines on what is allowed and what is not. You will rank higher on Google if:

  • It can search through your website easily and understand what it is that you offer
    • This information will be in your meta data and your text content.
  • You have lots of quality links pointing to your website
    • Links coming from websites with a high page carry more weight.
  • Your website is older
    • The more established your site the better it is.
  • Your website is updated regularly
    • Google loves current information.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that Google finds some website builds difficult to read; flash websites and websites with frames might look great but they really aren’t a good idea if you want to be found on page 1.

These are just a few of the factors involved in getting top rankings. If you are thinking about optimising your own website, make sure you work within Google’s guidelines and don’t implement any black hat SEO by mistake or you won’t even rank for your company name!

And if you have spent $$$ building a site that has structural flaws, give us a call. We might still be able to help you.

What YOU Can Do To Improve Your Rankings

How much you can do to improve your search engine rankings will depend on how familiar you are with HTML but even with no HTLM knowledge you can still make positive changes to optimise your website. The most important factor is keywords; they must be very relevant to what you are offering. Keywords should be used in navigation and content. The domain name also plays a part in SEO, rather than have your company name as your domain name it’s better to have a descriptive phrase of what you do. An example would be www.SydneyPlumber.com.au. Are you targeting your own country, another country or worldwide? Your domain should reflect this by being a .com or .com.au for instance.

Tip of the Month

Get writing!.....Write articles and link your key phrases to relevant pages on your site. Articles should be informative; no one wants to read a sales pitch! An article should be 200 – 300 words and talk about a subject that is interesting and relevant to your business. For example, if you have a fashion website you could write about upcoming trends then link key phrases like ‘skinny jeans’ to the ‘skinny jeans’ page on your website. You can then post these articles in various resources on the internet.

What’s the Go with Facebook Advertising?

Facebook advertising can be a great idea but it is more relevant for some industries when compared to others. The great thing about advertising on Facebook is its cheap and you can really target your market by being able to filter by age, gender, location and interests. This feature ensures that no money is wasted advertising to the wrong people so you get great value for money. The down sides are that adverts are very small and only allow a little amount of text so if you do decide to advertise on Facebook make sure that your advert stands out from a crowd, is eye catching and engaging!
